Hill responded by raising his arms up in the direction of the referees, who had no choice but to issue the Australian a red card. Hill provoked Swain by tugging his hair, earning him a yellow card, which infuriated Swain.

At the time of the event, England was leading 6-3, and BBC pundit Ugo Monye said the referee’s call was “right on.” Dylan Hartley, a different former England player, told Sky Sports that he had “a moment of craziness,” which is ironic coming from me.
Despite the fact that the incident took place right in front of the referee’s eyes, Hill did manage to strike Swain in the face with two open palms. Some Australian rugby fans believed that called for additional intervention from the referee. One wrote: “How did the ref overlook this?”
When Hill came out of his penalty period, England was down 9-6, but shortly after his introduction, Ellis Genge scored a try to give England the lead again.
Eddie Jones’ team needed to respond positively after being destroyed by the 14-man Barbarians two weeks ago. Even though they were short a man for 43 minutes against England, the Barbarians scored eight tries and won 52-21.
The Australians came back with three tries to take the lead 30-14, but England did not learn its lessons from that defeat. With two converted tries, England staged a last-ditch comeback to lessen the humiliating score, but Australia ultimately prevailed 30-28.
