Cesar Chanal, a sidecar driver, has been identified as the third person to die at the Isle of Man TT after organisers mistook him for his companion with his crash video viral

Initially, it was reported that sidecar passenger Olivier Lavorel died at the site of an accident on Saturday, June 4th, but TT Races officials have since confirmed that it was driver César who died.

Initial identification methods “using known protocols… would appear to have resulted in a wrong identification,” according to the organization’s statement.

On the first lap of the event, Cesar, a Frenchman from Lyon, was killed in an accident at Ago’s Leap, barely under one mile into the circuit.

“The race was paused with full-course red flags raised, and medical personnel, a Traveling Marshal, and emergency services were quickly despatched to the scene,” the TT races stated in a statement after the event.

One of the participants had life-threatening injuries and was regrettably pronounced deceased at the spot. The second competitor was knocked out and suffered serious injuries. The injured racer was treated on the side of the road before being taken to Noble’s Hospital, where he was treated before being airlifted to a specialist hospital in Liverpool.

“Using known processes, an initial identification procedure was done, which appears to have resulted in an erroneous identification. On Saturday, June 4th, we believe César Chanal perished at the scene of the collision. Olivier is still in serious condition and is undergoing treatment.

“The families of both competitors have been notified.”

What did their family state?

César’s family sent an internet message saying, “I regret to report the passing of César, gone way too soon.” “Your presence and grin are already missed,” it said, “but you’ll always be in our hearts.”

Olivier and César were both newbies to the Isle of Man TT Races, having been promoted from position 39 to position 21.

This was due to the fact that they qualified as the 15th quickest pair, with a lap speed of 108.420mph.

In the French F1 and F2 National Sidecar Championships, Olivier and César scored multiple victories and podium finishes. Following the deaths of Davy Morgan, 52, and Mark Purslow, 22, César is the third rider to die at this year’s Isle of Man TT Races.
