Guillermo Rigondeaux will have a tough fight on his hands to save what is left of his ring career. The domestic tragedy that left the Cuban boxer hospitalised till noon on this Friday left him with injuries to his face and both eyes. Rigondeaux’s manager, Alex Bornote, claims that he was cooking in his Miami residence on Friday evening when a pressure cooker burst in his face, seriously impairing his vision to the point where he is now only thought to have 20% of it, and putting his boxing career on hold.

The situation is quite awful, Bornote stated. “When the pot exploded and we observed Rigandoaux’s injuries, we feared the worst because the explosion’s effects on his face and eyes were severe. We do, however, anticipate his recovery.

According to the management, Rigondeaux will have a number of tests done on his eyes to ascertain the extent of the damage, but initially they think that only the retina was injured and, if confirmed, the tissue will heal on its own with full return of the vision.

The examinations in the coming hours will be crucial for the twice Olympic champion, but, if something more complicated is found in the optic nerve or beyond the retina, Rigondeaux will need surgery, and his vision’s future would then be less certain. In any event, Rigondeaux has suffered a major setback because preparations for the next bout were already underway, said Bornote.

Rigondeaux has since posted a photo of himself on social media with his wounds. His severe burns were depicted in a graphic manner. “This is what I see every night when I close my eyes,” he wrote as the caption. Sometimes, forgetting is difficult. At the age of 41, Rigondeaux’s future in boxing is uncertain.

He first made a name for himself as an accomplished amateur by winning back-to-back Olympic gold medals for Cuba in Sydney in 2000 and Athens in 2004.

He was one of the combatants in the sport who was most shunned throughout his professional career’s peak. He held the title of WBA super-bantamweight king and defeated Nonito Donaire in 2013 in a performance that scared off rival champions.
