30 April saw the TikTok set social media platforms alight. And while it was subsequently taken down on TikTok owing to the hue and cry over it, the video managed to make its way on Twitter with Malaysians livid with the enthnicity of the employees seen working at the store.
Bonia, a luxury retail store which is revered for its handbags and shoes is based out of Malaysia. However, the video showed all the employees working at the store to be only from China with their race having sparked an outrage in Malaysia.
Malaysians have gone onto lash out at the company with many of them calling out the company for its racial prejudice. Bonia has since gone onto issue a statement denying the claims as it said, “Diversity in a workplace is important not only for personal career development but integral for us as a progressive lifestyle brand. We are, and have always been, a company that prides itself on nurturing inclusive work culture.”
The company has also claimed the portion of the store was only one part of the company and didn’t tell the entire story of their hiring practice as people demanded for a boycott of the company’s products.
