Violent altercations broke out between Brazil and Argentina fans before their World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday night at the Maracana. Reports state that when the home crowd began jeering Argentina’s national song, Albiceleste and Selecao supporters got into an altercation. Even after the local police got involved, the violence persisted.

As it became apparent that there would be no quick resolution to the altercation, Messi and the Argentina team hurried to the stands to break it up, but they eventually departed the pitch. However, the Brazilian players stayed there.

The current World Cup winners were forced to exit the pitch just before play began as a result.

Messi’s team left the locker room after it was deemed safe to do so, and they went on to win a close game 1-0. Argentina’s players, including Angel Di Maria, got into a furious argument with the crowd as they were passing through the tunnel.

As they made their way to the tunnel, fans seemed to be hurling glasses and other beverages at the star midfielder for Argentina and his teammates. In response, Di Maria spat back at the spectators, and his teammates talked back. But as the players headed to the locker room, the altercation did not get more physical.

In front of their supporters at the same end of the stadium where the annoyance arose, Argentina celebrated their triumph over their biggest rivals, defeating them 1-0 thanks to a headed goal by defender Nicolas Otamendi in the 63rd minute. Long after the final whistle, they continued to celebrate with their supporters on the pitch.

Meanwhile, this was not the first time the Brazilian and Argentine fans got involved in an acceleration. Before the teams’ Copa Libertadores final this month, supporters of Brazil’s Fluminense and Argentina’s Boca Juniors engaged in violent altercations in Rio de Janeiro.
