Gun violence in schools
According to data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), almost one out of five public schools in the US recorded at least one violent event involving a firearm in the previous year. This is a 30 percent increase over the previous five years, highlighting the growing epidemic that has left instructors, parents, and children feeling anxious and afraid.
The disturbing fact is that, according to data from the School Safety Advocacy Council, over 90% of children in all grade levels now take part in lockdown exercises. These exercises, designed to get pupils ready for any emergency, are a clear recognition of the ongoing danger to what ought to be safe havens for education.
