The boy, who couldn’t be publicly identified because of his age, lashed out after an officer encountered him after he allegedly jumped a turnstile in East Harlem over the weekend.
Reportedly, the teen was previously arrested for possession of a loaded gun and robbery. However, he was released the next day after appearing in court.
In a recent assault, another teen, a 16-year-old girl ducked under the turnstile with the boy and tried to free him from the officer’s hold. She even threw a few punches and tried to drag the cop off of the boy. Subsequently, a lady officer dragged her away as the NYPD arrested the boy.
According to a report by DailyMail, the President of the Police Benevolent Association of the City of New York said in a statement that, “If New Yorkers want to know why the chaos in the transit system is not improving more quickly โ this is why”.
He further said, “The criminals underground know they can get in a brawl, choke a cop and be back out in hours. Cops are putting ourselves on the line to make the subways safer, but we are feeling abandoned by a justice system that wonโt back us up”.
The brawl began after the boy allegedly verbally abused the officers, when they tried to arrest him. After that he began assaulting the officers in an attempt to escape.
The video showed the boy with a bloodied face as officers finally managed to pin him down onto the ground. He was arrested and charged for assaulting a police officer, obstructions of governmental administration, and resisting arrest.
The teen girl was also arrested on the same charges but the outcome of her arraignment remains unclear.
However, the teen was released in less than 24 hours after his chaotic arrest.
Meanwhile, the NYPD chief, Jason Wilcox had a meeting with MTA board members and talked about how the assault on officers has significantly risen this year.
