How the injury took place
The injury took place during a game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Washington Commanders started off strong against the Jacksonville Jaguars with a 7-3 lead in the first quarter.
The sturdy lead however, came at a price as the Commanders lost their rookie defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis to a knee injury on the first play of the team’s second defensive drive against the Jaguars.
Team Trainers rushed to the scene and tended to his left knee for a few minutes before bringing out the cart for the former Alabama Crimson Tide defensive lineman.
What does Mathis’ injury mean to the team?
Mathis was drafted to the team to add depth in the interior defensive line alongside Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne. As such, his injury will not affect the first team but it will hurt the team’s depth going ahead into the season.
During the last season, Mathis racked up quite a performance. He managed to collect more than 40 tackles, nine tackles for loss, and more than seven sacks throughout the season.
Besides these impressive numbers, Mathis made significant strides as a pass-rusher, which helped his draft stock.
With Kamren Curl already ruled out, Mathis’s injury comes as a heavy blow to the Washington Commanders.
