Sanjay Pandey, who retired from the police force, was succeeded by Phansalkar. The Maharashtra home department announced hisย appointment on Wednesday. Phansalkar was chosen as the Police Commissioner based on his performance and seniority.
At a time when the state is experiencing political unrest, Phansalkar took over as the head of the more than 40,000-strong policeย force of Maharashtra.

Vivek Phansalkar is a famous IPS officer of India and has been in news lately because he was recently appointed as a commissioner of the Mumbai Police.
The new Mumbai Police Chief, Vivek Phansalkar, is a 1989 batch IPS officer. Since 2018, Vivek Phansalkar has served as the commissioner of police for Thane. In the police community, he is regarded as a polite and soft-spoken police officer with a distinguished career. While his exact date of birth isn’t known, he is aged between 55-60 years.

His Career
Phansalkar went on to hold the positions of Additional Director General of the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad and ADG, Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau throughout his long police career.
Vivek Phansalkar also worked as the acting Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime)ย at the time. From 1993 until 1995, Phansalkar worked as former Governor Dr. PC Alexander’s ADC throughout the early years of his professional life.
From 1995 to 1998, he worked as Superintendent of police in Wardha and Parbhani and from 1998 to 2000, he went on to work as a deputy commissioner of police in Nashik.
Between 2000 and 2003, he was posted as a Superintendent of police, CID (crime), Nagpur. He also worked as a director of vigilance for Cotton Corporation of India between 2003-07. From 2007 to 2010 he also worked as an Additional commissioner of police for Pune and Thane.
From 2015 to 2016, Vivek Phansalkar worked with the ATS. Before this, he held the post of Joint Commissioner of Police (Administration) and Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) in 2014.
From 2018 to 2022, he was made the Thane police commissioner.
