2013 IPL: Kohli and Gambhir

The bitter rivalry between Kohli and Gambhir started during the 2013 IPL when Gambhir was leading KKR and Kohli was leading RCB. During a match at Chinnaswamy, Gambhir reportedly made a comment that angered Kohli after he got out. The situation escalated quickly, and the two had to be separated by Rajat Bhatia, who played for KKR at the time.

2016 IPL: Another heated exchange

In another IPL game between RCB and KKR, three years after their first altercation, Gambhir and Kohli had another argument. This time, Gambhir threw the ball toward Kohli’s end of the pitch when there was no chance of a run-out.

Kohli’s captaincy and Gambhir’s omission

In December-January of the 2014-15 Australia tour, Kohli took over from MS Dhoni as the Test captain. Gambhir, who was already out of contention from the white-ball squads, had hoped to make a comeback in the red-ball format. Despite Gambhir’s good performances in domestic cricket, Kohli did not consider him for the Indian Test team.

In addition to Gambhir’s declining form, Kohli’s decision to move on from him was a significant factor in Gambhir’s exclusion from the team. Gambhir did return to the Test team under Kohli’s leadership for the 2016 home series against New Zealand and England, but he was dropped after only two matches.

LSG vs RCB Match: an aggressive celebration by Gambhir

The recent altercation between Kohli and Gambhir after the LSG and RCB match at Lucknow was triggered by the LSG mentor’s aggressive celebrations and gestures in their previous encounter in Bengaluru. Kohli saw it as an opportunity to seek revenge and said, “If you can give it, you gotta take it, otherwise don’t give it.”

LSG vs RCB match

Kohli got angry with LSG and this led to him having arguments with Naveen-ul-Haq and later on with Gambhir. The IPL Code of Conduct was violated by both players during a match, resulting in a fine of 100% of their match fees.

The altercation between the players appeared to have been triggered by a brief exchange between Kohli and Kyle Mayers, who is an opener for the LSG team. While the players were shaking hands, Gambhir pulled away Mayers from a chat with Kohli.
