More than two years later, we now know Thorfinn’s fate and what the future holds for Vinland Saga, thanks to a new teaser confirming the season 2 release date.

A Cryptic Viking Renaissance In The Nordic Runes

Shuhei Yabuta, the director of Vinland Saga, posted three photographs of the major characters on September 22nd, 2020, and urged fans of the series to identify “a minor easter egg.”

Fans instantly deduced that the Nordic runes in the bottom corners of each image meant “Sea-Son-Two” when translated to English.

There was also some Japanese text from a dialogue between the characters, with Thorfinn asking “How long must we wait?” and Askeladd responding, “That’s why I despise kids…” and Canute adding, “It’s soon…I think…”

On July 7th, 2021, the series’ official Japanese Twitter page announced that the hit anime had been renewed for season 2 with the first teaser trailer, see below.

While the formal announcement was hailed by the Vinland Saga community, the show’s continuance shocked very few fans. Not only was the first season a huge success, garnering 8.8/10 on IMDB and 8.73/10 on MyAnimeList with over 597,000 reviews, but there is still enough manga source material to adapt.

Anime Geek (previously Monsters and Critics) reports that episode 24 finished by adapting up until chapter 54 of volume 8 of the manga. The good news is that, as of June 2022, 193 chapters in 26 full volumes have been released in Japan — check the end of this page for information on where to read the manga in English.

Vinland Saga Season 2 Will Be Released In January 2023

Today, June 8th, the Vinland Saga anime’s Japanese website and Twitter accounts revealed that season 2 will be released in January 2023 and published the official teaser video for the next harsh adventure.

In addition to the announcement of a comeback in Q1 2023, it was reported that Studio MAPPA will be taking over from Wit Studio, with key personnel from the first season slated to reprise their roles in the forthcoming second season.

Unfortunately, no precise release date for Vinland Saga season 2 has been established; however, fans can expect the anime to return on either Sunday, January 8th or Sunday, January 15th, following the first season’s domestic airing in Japan.

Director Shuhei Yabuta announced in February that the crew had encountered an unforeseen glitch in development. Yabuta stated on Twitter, “We have been hit by an unforeseen issue.” But, owing to the help of many people, we can now focus on our job in a stable atmosphere.”

Takahiko Abiru, the character designer for Vinland Saga, had previously released an update on the production of season 2. Abiru posted the following on his Twitter account on April 19th, accompanied by a beautiful artwork, which you can see below.

Season 2’s episode count has not been revealed, nor has the foreign streaming distribution partner. Crunchyroll is the end destination for the bulk of globally licenced anime; however, Amazon Prime Video was the first to broadcast Vinland Saga season 1 in 2019. At the time of writing, neither the production team nor Amazon Prime has commented on Season 2’s global distribution.

Surprisingly, director Shuhei Yubata recently commented on the number of episodes that the sequel adventure may have; season one featured a total of 24 episodes. In response to fan curiosity on Twitter, Yubata stated, “Season 2 is extremely significant in Vinland Saga.” As a result, it is predicted that a sufficient number of episodes will be acquired to accurately convey the feelings of the characters.”

Where Can I Read The Original English Manga?

The English edition of Vinland Saga is issued in a somewhat different manner than conventional manga, with two volumes released concurrently. While there have been a total of 26 volumes produced in Japan, the English release has lagged significantly behind, with just 24 of those volumes being released overseas.

Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books A Million, Indiebound, Kinokuniya, Powell’s, Rightstuf, and Penguin Random House all sell physical books. Online readers may get the series via Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, Google Play, Book Walker, Izneo, Kobo, MyAnimeList, and Comixology.
