Ancelotti, however, seemed to downplay the severity of Vinicius’ injury, citing his initial attempt to continue playing despite the discomfort as he commented after the match, “I didn’t think it was very serious,” he continued by stating that he will not be signing any replacement. Nevertheless, the exact nature of the injury remained undisclosed, with speculations pointing to a problem in the back of his leg.

The adoption of a 4-4-2 diamond formation had been the hallmark of this season’s strategy. However, Vinicius’ injury could prompt a return to the familiar 4-3-3 formation.
Vinicius’ injury history provides a glimmer of hope amidst the uncertainty. Throughout his Madrid career, he has rarely faced substantial injuries, with the exception of a two-month hiatus in 2019 due to a ruptured knee ligament.
Initial assessments suggested a few weeks on the sidelines, making him doubtful for crucial matches against Atletico Madrid and in the Champions League group stages. His return date is estimated to be the 16th of September against Real Sociedad which can more likely shift considering the severity of the injury.
Alternatives to fill Vinicius’ role are under consideration. Joselu Mato and Brahim Diaz stand as viable options while shifting Rodrygo Goes to the left also present a possibility.
However, the compatibility of these options with the 4-4-2 diamond system remains a concern, prompting Ancelotti to decide whether to adapt the system or temporarily abandon it.
