Vijay Shankar is an Indian middle order batsman and a useful medium pacer, who was born on 26 January 1991. Shankar hails from a family of cricketers, where both his father H. Shankar and brother Ajay have played lower division cricket for Tamil Nadu.

As an all-rounder Vijay Shankar, has had a turbulent rise to the top of international cricket. Vijay was among the number-4 controversy in the Cricket World Cup, and when he was chosen over Ambati Rayudu. The events brought out a lot of uproar and left a negative impact on the cricketer with the fans unnecessarily dragging him into the spotlight.

Vijay currently plays for the Gujarat Titans as a an all-rounder, right-arm medium bowler, and a right handed Batsman.

In the IPL Auction 2023, the Ahmedabad franchise acquired the services of Vijay Shankar for Rs.1.40 Cr.

Domestic career

Vijay made his debut for Tamil Nadu aged 21 in a List-A match against Andhra in February 2012. He scored 6 runs without any wickets before making his first-class debut scoring 63 runs and winning 2 wickets. He followed up in the next match with an unbeaten century.

Vijay then made headlines again in the 2014-2015 Ranji Trophy, where he scored two centuries and three half centuries across seven matches. He averaged 57.7 and also won 8 wickets to help his team win the title.

Following his outstanding performances, Vijay won the Bishnuram Medhi award for the State cricketer of the year from the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association. Vijay also won a spot in the India A squad after a brilliant domestic season.

He played his first match against Australia A, where he scored an unbeaten half century. Vijay however, faced injury problems in 2016, but eventually came back with a bang in 2017. He led his side as the captain to win the Vijay Hazare and Deodhar trophies.

IPL Career

Vijay began his IPL journey in the 2014 IPL edition with the Chennai Super Kings. He played only one match for the team before it got banned. He then joined the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2017 edition. Vijay played four matches for the team and even scored his maiden half century.

In the following 2018 season, the all-rounder joined Delhi Daredevils for INR 3.2 crores. There, he played 13 matches and scored 212 runs. Ahead of the 2019 season, he rejoined SRH, and is now currently with the Gujarat Titans.

International Career

ODI Career

Vijay Shankar featured in the Indian ODI squad as the replacement for Hardik Pandya for the remaining two ODI matches of the Australian tour and the whole limited-overs series in New Zealand in January 2019.

Vijay Shankar later earned himself the much-debated number 4 slot in the Cricket World Cup following some decent performances in the middle-order in 2019, and a pressure last-over finish with the ball.

However, he suffered an injury, and was ruled out of India’s final two matches with Mayank Agarwal as his replacement. The selectors received much protests from the public for choosing Vijay Shankar over Ambati Rayudu.

T20I Career

Vijay Shankar made his T20I debut against Sri Lanka on 6 March 2018 for the 2018 Nidahas Trophy. He has so far featured in 9 T20Is and has taken 5 wickets aside from scoring 101 runs.
