The 15-year-old suspect is currently held on assault charges in St. Louis County Family Court. However, the case could potentially be escalated to adult court depending on the severity of the offense. If the victim were to die, the suspect could face first- or second-degree murder charges.
St. Louis County Attorney Wesley Bell said, “This is sickening and so difficult to watch. In Missouri, by law our office has no jurisdiction.”
He further added that this is a Juvenile court matter unless it is certified.
In Missouri, cases involving minors are typically handled in juvenile court unless they are certified to adult court. The decision to certify is made by juvenile court officials, not the prosecuting attorney’s office. There is no jurisdiction for the prosecuting attorney in cases involving minors unless the case is certified to adult court.
The incident has sparked outrage in the community and on social media. Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey has called for the suspect to be tried as an adult, but the final decision rests with juvenile court officials. The video’s viral nature has intensified the situation, with widespread discussions and opinions circulating on social media platforms.
The viral video of the Hazelwood East High School fight highlights the urgent need for preventative measures to address teen violence. Education on conflict resolution and de-escalation strategies can help prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
