Denis Chevrot retains men’s title 2023 IRONMAN European Championships Hamburg
The reigning champion Denis Chevrot of France retained his men’s title at the triathlon’s 2023 Ironman European Championship. The event took place in Hamburg, Germany, on Sunday, 4 June. The 34-year-old Frenchmen secured the spot with an impressive 2:31:39 during the final marathon leg. In total, Denis finished with a time of 7 hours, 26 minutes and 21 seconds. The record stands 26 minutes over his previous record set at last year’s event in Frankfurt (7:52:54).
Behind him was Belgium’s Pieter Heemeryck, who finished with 4 minutes and 41 seconds behind Denis. Denmark’s Kristian Hogenhaug, crossed the line just 11 seconds later after Pieter overtook him.
Jan Frodeno, the Beijing 2008 gold medallist and narrowly missed the podium. The local hero, who is in his retirement season as a pro-athlete, finished in fourth place. Meanwhile, another Olympic star, Alistair Brownlee, who is a double Olympic champion, pulled out from the entry list on Thursday.
Frodeno, initially emerged as the leader following the 3.8km swim, but, Chevrot went past him with less than 12km remaining. Following the win, Chevrot has now claimed his third career win over the IRONMAN distance. He has previously won at the 2021 event at Klagenfurt and at Frankfurt last year.
Accident strikes 2023 IRONMAN Hamburg race
Earlier in the day when the race began, a tragic incident took place where a motorcycle rider died and a 26-year-old triathlete suffered severe injuries. The accident took place around 08:40 local time when the leaders of the men-only professional race were riding towards the opposite direction of the age-group athletes on the two-lap bike course.
At 36km of the IRONMAN Hamburg bike course, a motorcycle race vehicle, carrying an official race photographer, was involved in a collision with a race participant,” according to statement released by IRONMAN.
“It is with our deepest regret to confirm the passing of the motorcycle operator from a significant medical event. Our thoughts and care are with the family whom we will support as we are able while they go through this difficult time.”
