Andreas Probst, a former police chief of the Bell, California Police Department, tragically lost his life in a hit-and-run incident on August 14, 2023, while he was riding his mountain bike. The incident occurred at approximately 6 am while Probst was cycling in the designated bike lane. He was struck by a 2016 Hyundai Elantra driven by a 17-year-old, who had other occupants in the vehicle.

How Andreas Probst succumbed to death?
Andreas Probst retired in 2009 and later relocated to northwest Las Vegas. However, on August 14, 2023, tragedy struck as he was cycling on North Tenaya Way, near West Centennial Parkway, when he was struck by a speeding car. Upon receiving an alert from Andreas’ Apple Watch indicating a fall, his daughter, Taylor Probst, was quick to respond. She and her mother, Crystal Probst, hurried to the scene of the accident, which happened to be just 3 miles from their residence.
Unfortunately, despite their efforts, Andreas Probst was pronounced dead at the University Medical Center. The Metropolitan Police Department has escalated the charges to include an open murder count after obtaining video evidence of the driver committing the crime. The identity of the 17-year-old driver has not been disclosed due to their age. Subsequently, the 17-year-old driver was apprehended and placed in a juvenile detention center. According to reports, the Metropolitan Police Department has concluded that the incident near the intersection of Tenaya Way and Centennial Parkway was a deliberate act.
In the video footage, the driver and their companion can be seen joyriding along the road, initially colliding with another vehicle attempting to change lanes. Subsequently, they encountered Andreas Probst, who was cycling in the same lane. The video captures the driver asking their passenger if they were prepared, to which the passenger responded:

A video capturing the moment of impact emerged online, revealing one of the suspected individuals inside the car recording the entire incident. This video stirred considerable outrage among internet users, prompting them to express their feelings and condolences for the late Andreas Probst on various social media platforms. While some individuals condemned the actions of the driver responsible for the accident, others focused on mourning the loss of the retired police chief.
Although the juvenile responsible for colliding with Andreas is presently confined at the Juvenile Detention Center, no legal accusations have been filed against the young individual seated in the passenger’s seat. The Southern Nevada cycling and law enforcement communities gathered with Andreas Probst’s family to share stories about his life. In commemoration of Andreas Probst, the Ghost Bikes Las Vegas association has placed a white bicycle at the location of the accident.
