Usman, also known as “the Nigerian Nightmare” is a UFC Welterweight Champion born to a military father and a mother who was a teacher while in Nigeria. He lived his early days in Benin City, Nigeria up to the age of eight when his father took his family to Dallas, USA.

Kamaru was born on the 11th of May 1987 in Auchi, Edo State in Nigeria, with humble beginnings like the majority of every other people in his hometown, but he soon had to suffer the arduous daily trek for miles just to get water for his family.

Upon moving to the US, as a Nigerian, he had issues settling in due to the language barrier and he couldn’t speak English fluently which caused him some issues.

However, Kamaru soon caught up with his peers and his education played a big part in his wrestling career and he soon found something to connect with after he joined his school’s wrestling team at Bovie High School in Arlington, Texas. In an attempt to settle down in a new territory, he attempted to join the school football team but he gave up after several failed attempts and focused on wrestling.

Following the advice of his high-school wrestling coach, Kamaru began his foray into the martial art world and despite his newfound love for the sport, he was consistently beaten by a girl during his early training but he refused to give up and soon held an impressive record of 53-3 at Bovie High.

He has also earned a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and is currently coached by the renowned Jorge Santiago and Trevor Wittman.

After meeting with former UFC lightweight champion, Richard Evans. Kamaru was influenced by the former fighter’s opinion and he decided to make a living out of wrestling by becoming a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter.

His professional MMA debut came against David Glover in November 2012 at RFA 5 in Nebraska, a tie he won impressively, unfortunately, he lost his next match to Jose Caceres but that didn’t deter him.

Kamaru Usman has established himself as a force to be reckoned with, and after his multiple victories – he was able to defeat Haydar Hassan in July 2015 to secure a huge UFC contract.

He was set up to fight Tyron Woodley in the co-main event of UFC 235 which ended up as a defining moment in history, he won the match, becoming the first-ever African to win the UFC Welterweight Championship.
