2022 edition of prestigious US Chess Championship culminated with title of open division winner going to Fabiano Caruana, we take a look at final results of tournament and prize money distribution

In open division of US Championship, Ray Robson was unable to defeat Jeffery Xiong in last round, therefore Fabiano Caruana won his second US Chess Championship title after draw with Levon Aronian. Meanwhile in women’s competition, a playoff will be contested on Thursday as Jennifer Yu overcame Thalia Cervantes to catch Irina Krush, who was held to a draw by her fierce rival Anna Zatonskih.

2022 US Chess Championship Last Round Results, Score, Winner, & Prize Money Distribution

Fabiano Caruana drew with Levon Aronian in the final round of ongoing US Chess Championships to finish with 8.5/13 points. Caruana’s closest challenger, Ray Robson got close to force a play-off, but after drawing with Jeffery Xiong, he finished with 8/13 points and had to settle for second place. Meanwhile in the women’s division, leader Irina Krush drew against Anna Zatonskih in her last round match to finish with 9/13 points. However, Jennifer Yu’s victory over Thalia Cervantes ensured that she also finished with 9 out of a possible 13 points. Yu will compete for the title against Irina Krush on Thursday’s play-off match.

In open division’s other last round matches, reigning champion Wesley So settled for draw against Samuel Sevian while Alex Lenderman won against Elshan Moradiabadi, which was 10th loss for Moradiabadi in this tournament. During last day’s highlight match between in-form Thalia Cervantes and Jennifer Yu who were both tied at 8/12 points, Yu claimed win to snap winning run of Cervantes and finish at 9/13 points alongside Irina Krush thanks to slip-up of the eight-time winner.

Caruana will win $60,000 for his efforts after 13 arduous rounds, while Robson will take home $45,000 as runner-up. Liang and Dominguez each received $30,000, and the remaining $97,000 will be split among the other players. Krush and Yu will each receive $35,000 after finishing first in the women’s division, while Cervantes will receive $20,000. The remaining competitors will split the remaining $70,500 in prize money.

2022 US Chess Championship Prize Money

In 2022, there was a total prize pool of $262,000 for the open division of the US Chess Championships, and $160,500 for the women’s division. After winning open division, Fabiano Caruana will take home $60,000 while runner-up bagged $45,000. In women’s division, Irina Krush and Jennifer Yu both bagged $35,000 after finishing with 9/13 points but will once more clash on Thursday to decide who gets crowned as women’s division champion.
