To crown the nation’s chess champion, the U.S. Chess Championship is an invitation-only competition. The U.S. Championship, which first took place as a challenge match in 1845, has been decided via tournament play for the majority of its lengthy history.

2022 US Chess Championship Format, Rules, Schedule, Date, Time, Venue, And Other Details
U.S. Championship will return in 2022 as a top over-the-board national championship competition with 14 of the best chess players in the country. The prize money of $250,500 and the coveted title of 2022 U.S. Champion will be at stake as these contenders square off over the course of 13 rounds. The 2022 U.S. Chess and U.S. Women’s Chess Championships will begin on Tuesday, October 4th with the Public Opening Ceremony, and will run through Thursday, October 20th with the Public Closing Ceremony.
The US Chess Championship 2022 will have a time limit of 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the remaining movements, with a 30 second increment added starting with move one. All games in the Event, including any playoffs, shall be “no draw” games.
