Perry led Robertson 4-0 at the half thanks to breaks of 102, 85, and 68. Robertson’s 88 gave him a chance to go within one, but early in frame six, Perry struck a superb pot on a red to a center pocket, setting up a run of 81 for a 5-1 score. In frame seven, when he was down 21–26, the Englishman had an opportunity to seal the victory, but he missed the pink to the center pocket, and his opponent retaliated by scoring 62. In the eighth, Robertson had a chance to further close the gap, but at 41-0, he missed a difficult black that would have been easy to catch in the top corner. Perry, who achieved a score of 64 this time, showed no mercy. In the other match of afternoon session, Luca Brecel, the runner-up from the previous year, defeated Lyu Haotian 6-4 despite facing a difficult test.
John Higgins was defeated 6-4 by Tom Ford in the first round of the Cazoo UK Championship in York, making him the most recent past champion to be eliminated. Ford will face Luca Brecel in the round of 16 as compensation for winning this match. Ding Junhui, a third-time champion, defeated Barry Hawkins 6-3 at the other table. Hawkins had a top break of 85 and led the match 3-1, but Ding took control after the break, winning five straight frames with breaks of 105, 62, 122, 72, and 91.
