According to reports, police officials found a five-litre jerry can, a bag, and a burned phone at the scene of the incident.
Cause of death
Rebecca passed away after suffering severe burns of over 75 per cent throughout her body following the attack. According to local police chief Jeremiah Ole Kosiom, Rebecca and her ex-boyfriend Dickson Ndiema were reportedly arguing outside their home located in Western Trans Nzoia County, in Kenya.
The boyfriend reportedly poured a liquid on the woman before burning her during the altercation. Following the incident, authorities rushed her to an intensive care unit at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital. However, she sadly passed away following her injuries on September 5, 2024.

Rebecca Cheptegei was a Ugandan cross-country runner who was born on February 22, 1991, in Uganda. She is also a long-distance as well as a marathon runner. She recently passed away on Thursday, September 5, 2024, after succumbing to her injuries at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, Eldoret, in Kenya. She last took part at the Paris 2024 Olympics, the previous month in August.
Her dad Joseph Cheptegei revealed that his daughter is a married mother of two daughters, age 9 and 11, and their father lives in Uganda. The names of her husband and children aren’t known though.
While police referred to Marangach as Cheptegei’s boyfriend, her father told reporters outside the hospital, “They were just friends, and I wonder why he wanted to take things away belonging to my daughter.”
Rebecca has a sister named Evalyne Chelagat. While Rebecca was the sole breadwinner of her family, her net worth isn’t known.

Rebecca Cheptegei was 33 years old at the time of her death and stood at a height of 1.66 m.

Throughout her career, Rebecca achieved several achievements at the national as well as international level. She initially began racing in 2010 and served as a soldier and trained with the Uganda Peoplesโ Defence Forces. Rebecca qualified for the Olympics after a new personal of 2:22:47 best, during the Abu Dhabi Marathon in December 2022.
He then finished in 14th place during the 2023 World Championship Marathon, before finishing in 14th at the 2023 World Championships marathon. She previously finished in fourth place during 2024 African Games, the half marathon. Rebecca Cheptegei last took part in the marathon at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she finished 44th.

Following her tragic death, thousands of fans as well as sports bodies have come forward to pay tribute. The Ugandan Athletics Federation made a statement saying:
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei early this morning who tragically fell victim to domestic violence. As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice.ย May her soul rest In Peace.โ
