UFC Fight Night: Font vs Vera Main Card
Main Event: Marlon Vera defeats Rob Font via unanimous decision (48-47, 49-46, 49-46)
Throughout his five-round main event fight with Marlon Vera, Rob Font was ferocious in his onslaught, but it was Vera who landed the stronger blows in the bantamweight showdown, parlaying three knockdowns into a hard-fought unanimous decision victory.
The No. 8-ranked Vera, who are now 19-7-1, won 48-47, 49-46, and 49-46. Font, who was ranked No. 5 in the world, fell to 19-6 after missing weight for the bout at 138.5 pounds.
Font’s jab and right hand were on point early on, and as the round progressed, he began to vary up his striking attack to the head and body. Vera handled the situation admirably, but Font’s offensive output and pressure were persistent, diluting anything “Chito” threw at him.
In round two, Font expanded his lead once again, and despite Vera’s kicks, the New Englander walked right through them and kept pressing. In the closing 30 seconds, a left from Vera wounded and floored Font, and while Vera was unable to finish the fight, he had gained significant momentum moving into the third.
To start round three, Font went for a takedown, but Vera defended and got free, and the two resumed their standing struggle. Font seemed unfazed by the previous round’s late setback as he continued firing and moving ahead, and Vera needed to land something big again to deter his opponent.
He found it again late in the round, dropping Font for the second time in the bout with a left punch upstairs followed by a left knee. Font was spared again again by the horn, but his face was worn from fighting.
Vera, again in the offensive lead, went at Font hard to start round four, but Font found his rhythm again in the second minute. Font was cut by an elbow moments later, but the Woburn product kept the heat on Vera, who was almost unmarked. Vera, however, dropped Font once again with two minutes to go. Vera landed leg kicks, allowing Font valuable time to recuperate, and with 47 seconds remaining, referee Jason Herzog brought the fight back to the feet, where it remained.
Font started the fifth with a flush right to the body, indicating that he was still in the hunt for the victory, and then a right elbow to the head. Vera remained calm in the face of adversity and threw back, seeking for another knockdown-inducing strike. And, as expected, he nearly knocked Font down in the last seconds, but the gutsy New Englander stayed standing and finished the fight.
