UFC 296 full fight card results, main event winner, & bonus award winners
Leon Edwards entered the UFC 296 main event with a fire in his belly after a disrespectful comment shook him before his title defense. Despite this, he dominated Colby Covington for nearly five rounds, securing a victory in a fairly one-sided manner. Throughout the fight, Edwards stayed composed and methodically dismantled Covington, mixing in takedowns and a submission attempt.
Covington, on the other hand, remained passive for most of the fight, only showing signs of life with a late takedown to avoid a complete shutout on the scorecards. While Edwards didn’t achieve a knockout, he punished Covington with leg kicks and precise striking. Covington, in a surprising turn, spent much of the early rounds evading exchanges. The judges unanimously scored the fight 49-46 in favor of Edwards, allowing him to retain his title.
Edwards utilized accurate strikes to cut Covington’s cheek and defended against takedowns despite Covington’s wrestling prowess. However, one of Edwards’ errors was attempting to overpower Covington, which allowed the wrestler to continue seeking takedowns. Despite Covington’s late control on the ground in the final round, it was insufficient to overturn Edwards’ dominance throughout the fight.
