Pereira turned pro in 2015, and he has currently won seven consecutive fights. He has a 4-0 in the UFC, and holds the UFC middleweight title after beating Adesanya via TKO at UFC 281.
Meanwhile, Adesanya made his pro debut back in 2012 and joined the UFC in 2018. The following year in 2019, Adesanya beat Kelvin Gastelum for the interim UFC middleweight title.
He then beat Robert Whittaker a few months later, in order to become the undisputed champion. “The Last Stylebender”, defended the belt five times before eventually losing it out to Pereira.
The loss to Pereira ended a staggering 23-fight win streak in the weight division. Following his title win, Pereira became the second-least experienced UFC champion, ever since Brock Lesnar.
Alex Pereira vs. Israel Adesanya rivalry recap
Alex Pereira and Israel Adesanya share a long rivalry that spans over seven years and two combat sports competitions. The pair first fought back in 2016, at the GLORY of Heroes 1 in China.
Despite out-striking his opponent Adesanya failed to match Pereira’s combinations and shots. Although Pereira showed signs of slowing down toward the end, Adesanya failed to take advantage. As such, Pereira ultimately secured the unanimous decision win.
Pereira and Adesanya then faced each other at GLORY of Heroes 7 in 2017. The fight took place in Pereira’s hometown in Brazil. Adesanya looked the stronger fighter and had Pereira by the ropes in the second round. However, things took a shift in the third as Pereira delivered a devastating knockout shot to the chin.
Their third fight and most recent fight took place at UFC 281, where Adesanya landed 86 strikes out of 209. He also managed over six minutes of control time. Meanwhile, Pereira landed 91 of only 140 shots, although most of his brutal shots came in the fifth round forcing Adesanya by the cage. With blow after blow of unprotected punches and strikes, the referee called out time. Pereira emerged as the eventual winner and maintained a 3-0 lead over his foe.
