The winners of the two major European club competitions, the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, compete in the UEFA Super Cup, an annual football match organized by UEFA. The Super Competition and European Super Cup were the first official names of the competition before it was changed to the UEFA Super Cup in 1995 as part of UEFA’s rebranding strategy. It is not acknowledged as one of UEFA’s important tournaments.

The UEFA Super Cup was played between the champions of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup from 1972 to 1999. It has been contested by the winners of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League since the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup was discontinued. Chelsea, the 2021 champions of the Champions League, defeated Villarreal, the 2021 champions of the Europa League, 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 stalemate after extra time. Barcelona and Milan, who have each won the trophy five times, are the most successful teams in the competition.
