The upcoming event in Cairo, Egypt, follows the first round held in Jakarta in February, and is the second of three competitions in 2023.
2023 Track Nations Cup Cairo preview
2023 Track Nations Cup Cairo will feature many of the world’s top track cyclists. So far, over 400 riders are expected to represent over 50 countries including Olympic champions and Tokyo 2020 medallists.
The 2023 Track Nation Cup series will also help athletes to progress to the upcoming Olympic Games Paris 2024. The two best results of every cyclist in the 2023 and 2024 seasons will count towards the UCI Track Olympic Ranking 2022-2024. This ranking will then decide which of the 190 track cyclists will earn spots at the upcoming Paris Olympic Games.
2023 Track Nations Cup Cairo date and venue
The 2023 Track Nations Cup Cairo will take place at the Cairo International Velodrome. The venue features a cycling track where cyclists will race around a 250m long, 7m wide track.
Meanwhile, the competition is set to begin on Tuesday 14 March starting with the women’s and men’s team pursuit qualifiers. It will end on Friday 17 March with the final event featuring a points race 20km of the women’s omnium.
2023 Track Nations Cup Cairo stars to watch
Jennifer Valente (USA)
Jennifer Valente, the Olympic omnium champion will represent the USA in Cairo. Valente is a three-time Olympic medallist who will be looking to win past New Zealand’s Ally Wollaston.
Ally Wollaston (New Zealand)
Ally Wollaston won omnium gold during the last Track Nations Cup held in Jakarta. Wollaston will represent New Zealand, who have an in-form team including Tokyo 2020 keirin silver medallist Ellesse Andrews.
Jack Carlin and Megan Barker (Great Britain)
Ahead of the competitions, Great Britain have named a strong 16-member squad which includes Jack Carlin and Megan Barker. Carlin won team sprint silver and an individual sprint bronze at Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Meanwhile Megan Barker, who is the younger sister of Rio 2016 gold medallist Elinor Barker, won a madison gold at the 2019 European Games in Minsk.
Awang Azizulhasni (Malaysia)
Malaysia’s Awang Azizulhasni recently won a silver in men’s keirin at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. Awang will be looking for another podium finish in Cairo just one year following an open-heart surgery. The 35-year-old veteran will also make one last attempt at an Olympic gold at the upcoming Paris 2024.
