Indonesians reportedly felt they couldn’t be left out of the fun after a series of AI-generated, absurd Italian Brainrot memes went viral on TikTok, showing a shark wearing Nike sneakers and a crocodile that doubles as a bomber plane.

The humanoid stick figure Tung Tung Tung Sahur was created with the express purpose of frightening people into breaking their fast on time during Ramadan. This is how the TikTok meme went viral.

The AI-generated meme that first surfaced on TikTok in February 2025 is where the phrase “Tung Tung Tung Sahur” got its start. The meme has a spooky Indonesian text-to-speech voice-over and an anthropomorphic wooden creature brandishing a baseball bat.

In order to prepare for Sahur, the pre-dawn meal during Ramadan, “Tung Tung Tung” imitates the sound of a traditional wooden gong or drum that is utilized in Malaysia and Indonesia. According to the meme’s backstory, the creature is a “scary anomaly” that appears at Sahur time and punishes people who disregard its warnings.

The lyrics are, “Tung tung tung tung sahur. Anomali mengerikan yang hanya keluar pada sahur. Konon katanya kalau ada orang yang dipanggil Sahur tiga kali dan tidak nyaut maka makhluk ini datang di rumah kalian. Hi seremnya. Tung tung ini biasanya bersuara layaknya pukulan kentungan seperti ini. Share ke teman kalian yang susah Sahur.”

The Tung Tung Tung Sahur meme changed as Ramadan came to an end in late March 2025. Memes depicting the wooden creature returning home after doing its role of waking people for Sahur were created by Indonesian internet users.

As its seasonal reign came to an end, videos showed Tung Tung Tung Sahur leaving, boarding fictitious planes, or abruptly disappearing.

After TikToker @sebuahvideorandom2 made one such post in late March 2025, this lighthearted farewell grew popular.

Reactions to netizens

TikToker @redbluzx_tiktoq shared a video of the stickman running away and striking his baseball bat before exploding on March 10, 2025. In the meantime, TikToker @drw.artz uploaded a video on March 22nd in which they drew Tung Tung with a mechanical pencil.
