It has been widely speculated that no one will be able to defeat four-time world champion and defending champion Annemiek van Vleuten, who also holds Olympic gold and silver medals. The 40-year-old Dutchwoman has already won this season’s La Vuelta Femenina and Giro d’Italia Donne; a victory in the Tour de France Femmes would round out her collection of women’s Grand Tour victories for 2023.
In addition to competing across eight stages for the yellow leader’s jersey, 22 teams will also compete for the green points classification jersey, the polka-dot jersey for the leader of the mountain classification, and the white jersey for the best young rider under the age of 23.
Tour de France Femmes 2023 route
The eight stages of the Tour de France Femmes 2023 total 956 km of racing. Beginning with a relatively level stage in the Clermont-Ferrand area, the peloton gradually moves southwest of France after the second uphill stage. Up until the seventh stage, which takes place on the rugged road to the famous Col du Tourmalet in the Pyrenees, a combination of flat and uphill stages will be raced. An individual time trial around Pau for 22 kilometres will mark the end of the race.
