Top Athletes From The Contingent Who Can Win A Gold Medal For India In The Tokyo Olympics 2021

The India contingent which will be going to Tokyo for the 2021 Olympics consists of both young and experienced athletes and every player is hoping to win a gold medal for the country

With more and more players joining the Indian Contingent every time, this has shown that apart from cricket, other sports are getting the same love, respect and admiration that they deserve. This also highlights the fact that India is improving year by year as far as Olympics is concerned.

1. Vinesh Phogat

During the 2016 Rio Olympics, Vinesh Phogat got injured in the quarterfinals. Her journey ended there. Since that day, her only goal is to qualify for the 2020 Olympics and to win a gold medal for the country.

Now let’s analyze as to why she is the best hope for India to win a gold medal in the marquee event. One of the biggest reason is the fact that she had already won gold medals in both the Asian Games as well as the 2018 Commonwealth Games  for the 50kg category. After that she also participated in the 53kg category.

She started her journey in 2020 by winning a gold medal in the Rome Ranking series.

2. Bajrang Punia

At the age of 14, Punia had won the first Bronze medal for India in the 2012 Olympics. He idolized Yogeshwar Dutt. He skipped the 2016 Rio Olympics and did not participate in the 65kg wrestling competition. He gave up his spot for Yogeshwar Dutt as that was his last Olympic appearance.

Now let’s analyze as to why he is the best hope for India to win a gold medal in the marquee event. Punia had won a gold medal both in the 2018 Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games as well. He qualified for the 2020 Olympics by winner a silver medal in the World Wrestling Championship, which was held in 2020. His glorious form continued when he won a gold medal in the Rome ranking series.

3. Mary Kom

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics is going to be the last Olympics for Mary Kom. She became the first Indian woman boxer for qualifying for the 2012 London Olympics. She even went on to win a bronze medal.

She couldn’t qualify for the 2016 Olympics. But at the same time, she went on to become the first boxer to have won eight medals in the AIBA World Championships.

She has qualified for the 2020 Olympics by winning in the BFI  national trials, which was held last year against Nikhat Zareen.

4. PV Sindhu

At the age of 20, Sindhu won her first Olympic medal and that too a silver medal in the Rio 2016 Olympics and after that she became an overnight sensation for the whole country.

Sindhu had won a gold medal in the 2018 Commonwealth Games and a silver medal for the women’s single event. She had also won the singles event in the 2018 Asian Games. In 2019, she created history by winning the 2019 BWF World Championships. She has qualified for the 2020 Olympics, She is the World No. 6 Badminton player according to the latest BWF rankings.

5. Manu Bhaker

In 2017, Bhaker created history by winning the Asian Junior Championship. This was her first success at the international level.

She became the best pistol shooters in the world by winning the 2018 Commonwealth games. She had even won medals at the ISSF World Cup in Mexico and the 2018 Youth Olympics.  She had won 5 gold medals in the 2019 ISSF World Cup and had won 2 gold medals in the Asian Shooting Championship in the same year.

She has qualified for the 2020 Olympics by performing really well in the 10 m air pistol World Cup which was held in Munich.
