Marketa Vondrousova shocked the world number two athlete Naomi Osaka in the third round in straight sets. Marketa Vondrousova was born on the 28th of June in 1999 in a small town named Sokolov in the Czech Republic. Her father introduced her to Tennis at four, having played the sport for leisure. Her mother used to be a volleyball athlete for SK Slavia Prague.

Although her biological mother and father divorced when Marketa was three, both her parents and her stepfather supported her in Tennis. The youngster had also been into a variety of sports like Skiing, Football, Table Tennis, and Floorball. Vondrousova is fond of pets and her net worth is more than $3 million.

Marketa Vondrousova’s junior career and ascendancy to the main roster

Marketa Vondrousova debuted in the ITF Junior Circuit aged 13, reaching the semi-finals of the French Open and Wimbledon in 2014. But the 22-year old fared well in the doubles division, clinching the Orange Bowls title. Vondrousova tasted more success the following year, winning two junior grand slams and three Grade-A.

Vondrousova lifted the doubles title in the 2015 Australian Open with compatriot Miriam Kolodziejova without dropping a set even as she got eliminated in the opening round in the singles division. The 24-year old replicated the success in French Open with Kolodziejova without losing a set again.

She ended 2015 by leading the Czech Republic to the Junior Fed Cup with Monika Kilnarová and Anna Slováková over the US team of Kayla Day and Claire Liu.

The 22-year old debuted in the WTA tour main-doubles draw in April 2015 at the Prague Open and the maiden singles appearance at the same competition a year later. But Vondrousova was unsuccessful at both. But the Czech Republic athlete won her first WTA title at the Ladies Open Biel Biene in April 2017, beating Anett Kontaveit in the final.

Marketa Vondrousova made her grand slam debut at the French Open that year in 2017 by making past the qualifiers. Though she beat Amandine Hesse in the main draw, Vondrousova lost to Daria Kasatkina. Unfortunately, she lost both her opening-round matches in Wimbledon and US Open.

After an underwhelming performance in 2018, Marketa Vondrousova thundered back in 2019 by upsetting Simona Halep at the Indian Wells Open. It was the 22-year old’s first significant victory of her career, but she kept stumbling at the knockouts.

The world number 14’s performance of the season came later in the French Open, reaching the final without losing a set. Vondrousova, entering the competition unseeded, beat four unseeded players. But she lost to Sofia Kennin in the decider. However, she became the first teenager to compete in the French Open final since Anna Ivanovic in 2007.

Furthermore, Vondrousova was the first teenager to participate in any grand slam final since Caroline Wozniacki at the 2009 US Open. But unfortunately, she could not maintain that success, exiting the first round of 2019 Wimbledon by losing to Madison Brengle. The youngster entered the top 20 for the first time, reaching a career-high of 14 and finishing the season at 16.

Marketa Vondrousova WTA 1000 doubles debut arrived at the Italian Open this year. However, she and Kristina and Mladenovic fell short in the final to Giuliana Olmos and Sharon Fichman. However, Vondrousova and Mladenovic defeated a stalwart pair of Barbora Krejzicova and Katerina Siniakova.

Marketa Vondrousova raised her stocks and ranking exponentially by stunning Naomi Osaka in the third round of the Tokyo Olympics, in straight sets. Vondrousova hardly looked unfazed by Osaka’s achievements and mainly by the crowd support he garnered. The current edition of the Olympics arguably looks like the underdogs’ event.
