Assamese boxer Lovlina Borgohain defeated Chen Nien-Chin to reach her next boxing semi-final match of the women’s welterweight category at the Tokyo Olympics 2021
The first woman boxer from Assam, India, Lovlina Borgohain displayed a commanding performance against Chinese Taipei’s Chen Nien-Chin on Day 7 of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics on Friday, 30th July. Assuring India its second medal, the boxer has now moved into the semi-final of the Women’s Welterweight division (64 to 69kg). She is only the third Indian to win a boxing medal for India at the Olympics, after Mary Kom and Vijender Singh.

The 23-year-old boxer will be facing Turkey’s Busenaz Sürmeneli in the Women’s Welterweight Semifinal on Wednesday, 4th August, 2021 (11am IST). The Turkish boxer made her way into the semifinals after defeating Ukraine’s Anna Lysenko 5-0 today with a unanimous decision.
Surmeneli is currently ranked 2nd in the world according to the AIBA rankings and is a former World Champion. She has also won several medals in junior-level competitions and the bronze at the 2019 European Championships.

India’s women’s boxing coach Ali Qamar described Lovlina’s win as an emphatic one for the entire contingent. He remarked how, after Mary Kom’s loss, Lovlina’s medal has injected us with a new energy. Qamar also commented how no other boxer in Lovlina’s category is as tall as her.
