Belinda Bencic was born on the 10th of March in 1997 in Flawil in Northern Switzerland to Dana and Ivan Bencic. Bencic received mentoring from Melanie Molitor, mother of former Swiss number one player Martina Hingis. At six years old, the youngster joined Nick Bollettieri’s academy in the United States and won several under-10 competitions.

In 2004, when Molitor moved to Wollerau, she opened her own academy so that Bencic could train there every day. The Swiss continued to work with Molitor in most of her teenage years and occasionally did with Hings as well. Belinda Bencic estimated net worth is about $5 million.

Belinda Bencic’s junior career

Belinda Bencic began competing at the Junior ITF Circuit, aged 13. She made it to the final of her debut event at the lowest-level Grade 5 Luzern Junior Competition in Switzerland. Bencic’s achievements in her junior career include winning French Open and Wimbledon and became the first player in girls’ singles to lift both the title in the same year.

The 24-year old was also the first Swiss girl to win a junior grand slam singles title since Martina Hingis in 1994. After producing some consistent results from 2011 to 2013, Bencic qualified in the 2014 Australian Open for the main draw. But she could not go beyond the second round.

The Swiss’ best result during the slams that year was reaching the US Open quarter-finals, preceding the third round of Wimbledon

During the competition, she registered over the then world number 7 Angelique Kerber and number 10 Jelena Jankovic. As a result, she became the youngest quarter-finalist since Hingis in 1997 and her success at grand slams led her to number three. Bencic also earned the WTA newcomer of the year award.

Rising through the ranks, awards and achievements

Though Bencic struggled in the first half of 2015, she made it to the fourth round of the Indian Wells and Miami Open. The 24-year old began turning her year around in the grasscourt season. The Swiss captured her maiden WTA title at Eastbourne International.

In August, she won the Canadian Open by defeating the likes of Caroline Wozniacki and Serena Williams.

The final saw Simona Halep retire due to illness, making Bencic the champion. It gave her the number 12 ranking. At the 2016 St. Petersburg’s Ladies’ Trophy, Bencic entered as the top seed and finished as the runners-up. As a result, she surged to the top ten for the first time. But the 24-year old slipped to 43 due to underwhelming performances in the grand slams.

In April, she dropped to 312 following a surgery on her left wrist, keeping her out for several months. But Belina Bencic finished the year by winning three tournaments in a row in Asia, Hua Hin Championships, Taipei WTA Challenger, and Al Habtoor Tennis Challenge.

The Swiss scored wins over Aryna Sabalenka, Simona Halep, Elina Svitolina, and finally Petra Kvitova in the final.

Bencic continued her winning streak at the Indian Wells Open, defeating the world number one Naomi Osaka and Karolina Pliskova. But the 24-year old lost to Kerber in the semi-finals. The Swiss once again beat Osaka before the French Open at the Madrid Open semis. It gave her the number 15 ranking. She finished her year strongly by lifting the Kremlin Cup as a wild card.

In February 2021, Belinda Bencic attained a career-high ranking of number four by making the quarter-finals in Doha and St. Petersburg. At the Olympics, Bencic beat some of the top-notch players to fix herself a medal.

The 24-year old defeated Jessica Pegula, Misaki Doi, French Open champion Barbora Krejčíková and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, and Elena Rybakina to reach the final. At the decider, she overcame Marketa Vondrousova 7-5, 2-6, and 6-3.
