Angelo Mathews becomes first international cricketer to be dismissed by ‘Timed Out’

Veteran Sri Lankan batter Angelo Matthews became the first-ever international batter to get dismissed by ‘Timed Out’ in cricket history. The incident happened when Matthews came on to replace the outgoing Sadeera Samarawickrama. Matthews reportedly came in with the wrong helmet and had issues adjusting it, eventually asking for a replacement. By the time team officials brought in the replacement, the Bangladesh players had appealed for a ‘Timed Out’. And the officials eventually granted it despite much protest from Matthews. None of the bowlers will, however, receive credit for Matthew’s wicket.

While Matthews is the first international cricketer to receive a ‘Timed Out”, it has happened before in Indian domestic cricket. The incident happened way back in 1997 during a match between Tripura and Orissa at Cuttack. Tripura’s Hemulal Yadav got dismissed by a ‘Timed Out’ during the match.

Angelo Mathews ‘Timed Out’ decision sparks controversy

While many may argue about the decision given by on-field officials Marais Erasmus and Richard Illingworth, their decision comes well under the rules and regulations of the Cricket World Cup 2023. The rule states that a batter has a maximum of two minutes to face the first ball after the previous batter’s dismissal. If the incoming batter does not meet these terms, the player receives a ‘Timed Out’. Interestingly, the decision prompted mixed reviews among various cricket icons as well. Former West Indies cricketer Ian Bishop claimed live on air that Matthew’s helmet strap broke. Adding that he was simply asking for a replacement. Meanwhile, former Pakistani pacer Waqar Younis called the decision against the spirit of cricket.
