The Thomas Cup 2022 was the tournament’s 73rd edition, and it was held in Thailand. It’s worth noting that India is only the sixth country towin the championship, whereas the other finalist, Indonesia, has won it a record 14 times.

Despite a shaky start in the final rounds, Lakshya Sen delivered when it mattered most, gaining India a 1-0 lead with an astonishing comeback win against world no. 5 Anthony Sinisuka Ginting byย 8-21, 21-17, 21-16.
Sen, a resident of Almora, was born on August 16, 2001, and is a former world junior no. 1. He won gold medals in the boys’ singles event at the 2018 Asian Junior Championships and the mixed team event at the Summer Youth Olympics.
His most notable senior performances are a bronze medal at the 2021 World Championships and a second-place finish in the 2022 All England Open.

Following Sen’s performance, the country’s best doubles combo of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy demonstrated their tenacity by rescuing four match points in the second game to defeat the Indonesian team of Mohammad Ahsan and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo in a three-set thriller 18-21, 23-21, 21-19.
Chirag Chandrashekhar Shetty was born on July 4, 1997, and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy was born on August 13, 2000. With a career-high rating of 7, they became the first men’s doubles partnership from India to be rated inside the top ten of the BWF World Ranking.
When they won the Thailand Open in 2019, they became the first Indian doubles pair to win a BWF Superseries or BWF World Tour (Super 500+) title.
- Kidambi Shrikant
Kidambi Srikanth, the former world number one,ย produced again another outstanding performance in the second singles, defeating Asian Games gold champion Jonathan Christie 21-15, 23-21 in just 48 minutes after Team India had seized theย Thomas Cup final’s trophy with 3-0 lead.
He was born in Ravulapalem, Andhra Pradesh, on February 7, 1993. In April 2018, he was named world number one in the BWF rankings.
Kidambi received India’s fourth highest civilian honour, the Padma Shri, in 2018, and the Arjuna award in 2015. He won the silver medal in the men’s singles event at the World Championships in 2021, being the first Indian to do so.
Thomas Cup 2022 Prize Money
Winners of both singles and doubles winners will get the cash prize of $120K from a total pool of $1 million for the tournament.
In addition, India’s sports minister Anurag Thakur awarded a financial prize of INR 1 crore to the team.
The Indian Badminton Association has also given a reward pool of Rs 1 crore for the badminton squad and Rs 20 lakh for the support crew. While awarding the prize money, BAI President and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma stated it is a proud occasion for every Indian.
