According to reports, the Belgian player has hurt his knee, and there are concerns that it may be a cruciate ligament problem that could require extended time off the pitch. Miguel Angel Dáz of COPE in Spain tweeted the information, stating that he got hurt during the morning session and had to get checked out right away to see how bad it was.
- Injury: Left ACL
- Situation: Very serious
- Return date: Unknown (at least 6 months)
How much time will Courtois be absent?
A ruptured ACL is a very difficult injury that often requires a very extended rehabilitation period. The player will have surgery in the coming days, and his rehabilitation period will start thereafter, Real Madrid has revealed.
In response to Courtois’ injury, Real Madrid released a statement that said: “After the tests conducted on our player, Thibaut Courtois has been diagnosed with a damaged anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. In the next few days, the athlete will have surgery.
Courtois will be out for at least six months, according to reports in Spain, but the club has not confirmed how long he will be gone. Courtois formerly played for Chelsea and Atletico Madrid.
Madrid might look for a new Number 1
With just two days until Madrid’s 2023–24 Liga season kicks off, Courtois’ injury leaves Carlo Ancelotti with Andriy Lunin as his only available goalkeeper. The 24-year-old international from Ukraine has little experience at the highest level, which might force Los Blancos to search the market for a new No. 1.
It will be difficult for Real Madrid to replace Courtois, who has been a star player for the team ever since he signed from Chelsea. In the near future, it’s anticipated that Lunin will start against Athletic Club on Saturday. A substitute could be in place in time for their second league match on August 19 against Almeria.
This is the first significant injury in Courtois’ career. In his fifth season with Los Blancos, Courtois, 31, played 43 games for Madrid in all competitions last year.
