Here is all you need to know about the regulations which apply to amateur golfers who win the prize money at The Masters 2023 and the full pool breakdown
The Masters 2023 competition’s second round has over. Although Tiger Woods, a five-time champion, hasn’t played very well over the first two rounds, Brooks Koepka, a LIV golfer, built a sizable lead and won the tournament.
The name on the list that most people find surprising is Sam Bennett, the golfer who finished in second place. The amateur player, who is 23 years old, made a spectacular Masters debut after the first two rounds of competition.
The Masters Golf 2023 prize money purse breakdown and what happens if an amateur wins it
If Sam Bennett or any other amateur golfer wins the Masters in 2023, fans around the world are still puzzling about what will happen to the $2.7 million prize money.
An amateur golfer who wins the Masters has two options: either decline the reward and preserve their amateur card, or give up their amateur status in return for the significant prize money and a professional card.
It’s interesting to note that throughout its history, no amateur player has ever won the Masters.
Rule 3 of the USGA’s prize money regulations state that no golfer may accept prizes worth more than £700 or US$1000. They can claim rewards that are worth more if they give up their amateur status.
A golfer might still get the travel and hotel money from the competition even after declining the prize money check. They are permitted to receive trophy awards or other non-cash prizes in addition to monetary prizes.
The prize caps do not apply to a reward for a hole-in-one made outside of a tee-to-hole golf competition. In this situation, the only provision is that the shot must be at least 50 yards long.
Additionally, when golfers, both individually and collectively, partake in gambling or wagering, this restriction is not applicable.
Along with a green jacket, gold coin and replica winner’s trophy, this year’s champion will take home a payout of $3,420,000. Professional players that are cut from the field each receive $10,000, while amateur golfers receive no money prizes for their wins.
