Background

Jung moved to Namyangju, a satellite city of Seoul, while he was in his mid-teens, after been born in Pohang, South Korea. Because of his small stature and rural upbringing, he was often tormented by his peers and was involved in numerous fights as a result. When his aunt could no longer bear seeing Jung’s plight, when he was roughly 14 years old, she took him to a nearby Hapkido gym.

Jung did kickboxing training until he was in his junior year of high school. He earned his bachelor’s degree in science and technology from Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology. He afterwards began judo and Brazilian jiu jitsu training.

Jung enlisted in the South Korean Navy at the age of 18 and began training in Taekwondo.  He won a sambo tournament organised by the Korean Sambo Association in June 2007, and in December of the same year, he won the Pancrase Korea Neo-Blood Tournament’s Lightweight division after defeating fellow South Koreans Yoo In Seok and Lee Hyung Geol.
