After 6 years without an increase, the prize purse for the 2024 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race would be raised by $50,000, bringing the total to $574,000, which includes money earned through Iditarod Special Awards, such as the Honorary Musher and the Spirit of Iditarod Award.

Prize money is allocated to the top 20 mushers corresponding to the place they finished in, and payouts aren’t finalized until after the race concludes. Beyond the top 20, every musher who reaches the finish line receives a flat amount, which this year is $2,000, according to the 2024 race rules, an increase from the $1,049 awarded in 2023.

The Iditarod runs its northern route in even years and its southern route in odd years, so the 2024 race will follow the northern route. This year, checkpoints have largely returned to normal and the northern route, at 975 miles, is slightly shorter than the southern route, 998 miles.

One of Alaska’s most famous winter events, the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, usually kicks off with enthusiasm in Anchorage on the first Saturday in March each year.

The afternoon after the Iditarod Start is when the Running of the Reindeer takes place, a run along Fourth Avenue with live reindeer. The competition for snow sculpture, the Miners and Trappers Ball, and the Charlotte Jensen Native Arts Market are all scheduled for Saturday.

With their dog teams, over forty mushers are in Alaska hoping to be the next big Iditarod champion. Ryan Redington, the grandson of co-founder Joe Redington of Iditarod, will try to win the event again after finishing in eight days, twenty-one hours, twelve minutes, and fifty-eight seconds the year before.
