On May 22, Google issued a Google Doodle to commemorate the 144th birthday of the unbeaten Indian wrestler Gama Pehlwan, often known as “The Great Gama.” It was created by guest artist Vrinda Zaveri.

Who Was Gama Pehlwan?

Ghulam Mohammad Baksh Butt, often known as Rustam-e-Hind or The Great Gama in the ring, was an Indian pehlwani wrestler and bodybuilder. He was the world’s unbeaten wrestling champion in the early twentieth century.

He was born on May 22, 1878, into a Kashmiri Muslim wrestling family in Jabbowal Village of Amritsar district, Punjab Province, British India (now Jabbowal district of Kapurthala District, Punjab, India). He died on 23 May, 1960 aged 82 in Lahore and died due to health issues with him suffering from a chronic heart disease.

He had moved from Amritsar to Lahore however he was not taken care of and he struggled with shortage of money. After quitting wrestling, he complained of asthma and heart disease and his condition worsened with him even having to sell his medals to sustain himself.

Gama’s father Muhammad Aziz Baksh, a Kashmiri Muslim, was a court wrestler who battled under the aegis of Maharaja Bhawani Singh of Datia and a borther named Iman Baksh. He was married to Wazeer Begum with whom he had 5 sons and 4 daughters. His height was 5 feet and 8 inches and was a Muslim by religion.

He initially gained attention when he entered a bodybuilder tournament in Jodhpur at the age of 10 in 1888. The contest drew over 400 wrestlers, with Gama finishing in the top fifteen and being crowned the winner by the Maharaja of Jodhpur owing to his youth. Maharaja of Datia then put him through his training.

His Career

Throughout his incredible five-decade career, Gama stayed unbeaten.  During the Indian subcontinent’s freedom struggle, he inspired innumerable people, including martial arts master and actor Bruce Lee.

In 1910, he won the World Heavyweight Championship after defeating renowned wrestlers in London. After that, he defeated world champions like Stanislaus Zbyszko, Frank Gotch, and Benjamin Roller.

Gama won a number of championships throughout his career, including the Indian editions of the World Heavyweight Championship in 1910 and the World Wrestling Championship in 1927, for which he was given the nickname “Tiger.”

Diet Of Gama Pehlwan

Gama used to perform 5,000 squats and 3,000 pushups a day, and his daily diet consisted of 10 litres of milk, 6 desi chickens, and a pound and a half of crushed almond paste mixed into a refreshing drink.
