The First Slam Dunk Success

Six months after its release in Japan, the picture had grossed over $103.5 million, or 14.43 billion yen. As of right now, it is Japan’s ninth-highest-grossing anime film and the fifteenth-highest-grossing film of all time. It has recently eclipsed Makoto Shinkai’s Weathering With You as the highest-grossing Japanese film of all time, and is currently only behind Shinkai’s Suzume no Tojimari.

On May 27th, after having sold 11.15 million tickets and earning 14.79 billion yen (about USD 105.4 million), Suzume closed in theaters. Given the close competition between The First Slam Dunk and Suzume, it is anticipated that Inoue’s film would win out by the end of its theatrical run, which still has at least a month to go.

On its debut weekend in Japan, the picture took in over $1 million. That was back on December 3, 2022. The opening weekend gross was around $9.50 million, or 1,295,808,780 JPY (Japanese currency). The film also took home the trophy for Best Animation at the 46th Annual Japan Academy Film Awards.

The film’s producer, Toshiyuki Matsui, also took home the top prize at the 42nd annual Fujimoto Awards, presented by the Eiga Engeki Bunka Kyokai (Film Theater Culture Association) in 2023. The film was directed by Inoue and scripted by him at Toei Animation.
