Season 2 opens during the spring, shortly after the garden party from the previous season. Jinshi conducts checks with the households of the rear palace, where concubine Gyokuyo informs him that Maomao has been working hard at the clinic. When Jinshi visits, he discovers Maomao has been diligently working on remedies to improve the lives of the concubines.
In the meantime, Maomao orders books from the brothel she previously worked at to educate the ladies-in-waiting. While Jinshi and Gaoshun initially consider reprimanding her, they instead opt to confiscate the books and arrange for novels to be printed for the concubines, which Maomao later suggests copying for wider distribution. At the Jade Pavilion, Lady Gyokuyo asks Maomao to accompany her child outside, where they discover a stray kitten.
After catching it, Maomao learns that keeping animals in the rear palace requires special permission. She cares for the kitten in the clinic, and the Emperor later grants her permission to keep it. The kitten is humorously dubbed “Admonisher of Thieves” for its role in hunting rats. The episode ends with news of a caravan soon to arrive. The second episode of The Apothecary Diaries season 2 will air on Friday, January 17, 2025, at 6 a.m. PT (Pacific Time).
