Tournament Format, Rules, and Prize Money Pool

The American Cup is seeded by rating, with the first round pitting 1 versus 8, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6, and 4 vs 5 players against each other. Players will compete in a two-game classic match, with rapid tiebreaks if necessary. The winners progress to the Championship Bracket, while the losers continue in the Elimination Bracket with rapid chess. Anyone who loses their Elimination Bracket match is automatically eliminated from the competition.

The American Cup is an eight-player double elimination knockout tournament held at the St. Louis Chess Club from April 20 to 29. In the Champions bracket, the games will be split into two classic (90 minutes + 30 seconds increment) games and two quick (25+10) games. If the scores are tied, quick (10+5) playoffs are held, and if the scores are still tied, an Armageddon game is played (5 vs 4 minutes, with draw odds for Black).

The victor of the Champions bracket will face the winner of the Elimination bracket at the end of the tournament. A second match is played if the champion of the Champions bracket loses. The Saint Louis Chess Center is hosting the event, which includes two tournaments: an Open Tournament (Group A) and a Women’s Tournament (Group B). Both tournaments are knockout tournaments with an eight-player field.
