Who is Alexey Pajitnov?

Alexey Pajitnov is a well-known Soviet-born American video game designer and computer engineer. He has been in the news because Apple TV+ recently released the movie ‘Tetris’ based on his life and game.

His full name is Alexey Leonidovich Pajitnov. He was born on April 16, 1955, in Moscow, USSR (now Russia). His mother was a journalist who wrote for both newspapers and a cinema magazine, while his father was an art critic.

After completing his schooling, Alexey Pajitnov studied applied mathematics at the Moscow Aviation Institute.

He eventually relocated to the USA and became a citizen in 1991. He is presently a resident of Clyde Hill, Washington. He is married, and his wife’s name is Nina. He also has two sons named Peter and Dmitri. On Mount Rainier in 2017, Dmitri perished while skiing.

He is currently 67 years old.

His career

As a summer intern at the Soviet Academy of Sciences in 1977, Alexey Pajitnov began his career in video game production. After graduating in 1979, he joined the Academy’s Dorodnitsyn Computing Center, where he worked on speech recognition.

He developed the original iteration of Tetris while working at the Computer Center using an Electronika 60. The first prototype took him two weeks to create, and as time went on, he added additional elements to the game. On June 6, 1984, he finally finished the game and distributed it via the Soviet corporation ELORG.

As Tetris became incredibly famous, Alexey Pajitnov produced a follow-up called Welltris that used the same gameplay mechanics but in a three-dimensional setting. Unfortunately, Pajitnov did not get any Tetris royalties since he worked for the Soviet government.

Pajitnov and Vladimir Pokhilko immigrated to the US in 1991, when they joined up with Henk Rogers to form the Tetris Corporation, enabling him to earn royalties from his game. In addition, he developed the game Pandora’s Box, which featured more conventional jigsaw puzzles.

He was employed at Microsoft from 1996 until 2005, where he made contributions to a number of video game projects like MSN Mind Aerobics, Microsoft Entertainment Pack: The Puzzle Collection, and MSN Games groups. Furthermore, he worked with WildSnake Software to develop fresh puzzle games.
