Parul cruised to victory, barely straying from the pack’s lead, but Sanjivani — the 2019 champion trying to retain her crown — stayed up with her until the group approached the Kanteerava stadium for the closing stretch.

“The route was a bit mountainous,” Parul said of the race, which she has competed in before, “but it was nice since we practiced for it, and I’m delighted with the speed test I did.”

Parul finished first and achieved a personal best in 10K road running at 34:38 thanks to the last sprint. At 34:44, Sanjivani finished six seconds behind.

Details of The Game:

Komal Jagadale was the day’s biggest surprise, breaking away from the pack in the final 350 meters to finish in 35:28. Komal, a steeplechaser, had an excellent maiden 10K run, finishing ahead of her seniors, something she herself was surprised by.

“I didn’t expect to be on the podium. I was too preoccupied with racing against the Indian field to bother about chasing down overseas athletes.”

Abhishek Pal finished first in the men’s field at 30:05, followed by Kartik Kumar and Gulveer Singh at 30:06. Kartik and Gulveer had never raced a 10K on the road before, and both runners — who train together at an Ooty camp — were happy with their results.

“I’m relieved to have won this time. It’s my third time at the TCS World 10K; I finished fourth in 2017 but was unable to compete in 2019 because of a knee ailment.

Women’s 10K (Indian): Parul Chaudhary 34:38, Sanjivani Jadhav 34:44, and Komal Jagadale 35:28. Abhishek Pal (30:05), Kartik Kumar (30:06), and Gulveer Singh (30:06) are the top three Indian men in the 10K.
