Prediction
On Wednesday, fourth seed Taylor Fritz will face World No. 19 Denis Shapovalov in the second round of the 2022 Erste Bank Open.
Yoshihito Nishioka challenged Fritz in the first round. Since no player reached a break point in the first set, a tie-break was required to decide the winner. The first game was won by the Japanese player. Fritz was able to preserve three break points that Nishioka had early in the second set. The American was serving to stay in the game at 5-4, and by tenaciously maintaining his serve, he bravely prevented a match point. The 2022 Indian Wells champion kept himself in the running after winning the second tie-break of the match.
Nishioka got things moving by taking the first break and leading 3-1 in the decisive set. Fritz then turned the match around by winning five straight games to win 6-7(4), 7-6(7), 6-3.
On the other hand, Jurij Rodionov was the opponent for Denis Shapovalov’s first match. He broke serve to take a 4-3 lead in the eighth game of the first set. The Austrian came back in the very next game to tie it. The Canadian broke his opponent’s serve once more to take the lead at 5-4. In the following game, he won it by serving out the set. To start the second set, he broke Rodionov’s serve. He then held serve in the next game to go up 2-0. Shapovalov maintained his advantage after this.
In the closing stages, Rodionov rallied, saving three match chances on his serve to bring the score to 5-4. After that, he had four break chances, but Shapovalov saved them to win the match 6-4, 6-4.
Shapovalov dominated the match while prevailing over Rodionov in straight sets. Despite playing a faultless match and having substantially inferior serving statistics than Fritz, he finished with 28 winners and only 16 unforced errors. Both players have a strong serve and standout shooting abilities. Just a few weeks earlier, Fritz won their previous encounter by defeating Shapovalov in the third set. Their first encounter was highly competitive, and the match’s conclusion was decided by a slim margin.
Fritz is performing better right now with his sixth straight victory. He’ll be the favourite to advance in this competition.
