Born Herbert Middleton Jr. on May 10, 1940, he was a native of Newark, New Jersey. Beginning his career in show business at New York’s influential Negro Ensemble Company, he soon appeared in numerous TV shows, including “Sanford and Son,” “What’s Happening,” “Good Times,” and “The Bob Newhart Show.”
His first feature film debut was in the year 1978 with “House Calls.” In the year 1979, he followed up with “Rocky II,” where he played a lawyer. He kept working on the roles in ‘Beyond Death Door’ and ‘The Hunter’, along with a TV show called ‘The Love Boat’. Later, he began to appear on the program in 1981, and the following year he was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. which he continued with the well-liked cop drama show all the way until 1987.
The program, which was produced by Steven Bochco and Michael Kozol, went on to achieve great success despite its initial failure, finishing just 27th among primetime shows and never cracking the Top 20 in a three-network world. Detective Neal Washington, played by Blacque, was a renowned, street-smart, no-nonsense veteran officer distinguished by his persistent toothpick and hat. His character remains one of the most like the ones that made him an integral part of “Hill Street Blues” for all seven seasons.
In the series, he partnered with boozy Detective JD LaRue, playing Kiel Martin, who occasionally disregarded and went against established police procedures.
The revolutionary 1989–1991 TV soap “Generations,” the very first daytime television series to have an African American family as an aspect of its main plot, featured Blacque as an original television personality. His involvement with the Atlanta Black Theater Company and the North Carolina Black Theater Festival continued even after the show ended.
