This marks Gukesh’s first major tournament since his historic victory in the 2024 World Chess Championship, where he captured global attention by defeating Chinese GM Ding Liren in a dramatic series to become the youngest-ever World Chess Champion. In the opening round of Tata Steel Chess 2025, Gukesh impressed by beating Dutch GM Anish Giri, making a strong start to his 2025 campaign.
In his second-round clash with Fedoseev, Gukesh faced off with the black pieces for the first time since his world championship triumph. Under significant pressure, Gukesh demonstrated exceptional resilience and defensive prowess, managing to secure a hard-fought draw. Meanwhile, Praggnanandhaa also joined the leaders after defeating fellow Indian GM Pentala Harikrishna in an exciting all-Indian showdown. Earlier, Praggnanandhaa had drawn his first-round match against Nodirbek Abdusattorov.
