Anish Giri triumphed in the 85th Tata Steel Chess tournament by capitalizing on a mistake made by Richard Rapport, while Jorden van Foreest dethroned the previous leader Nodirbek Abdusattorov. Wesley So managed fourth-place finish after his draw against Pragg, while Magnus Carlsen defeated Arjun Erigaisi to tie Nodirbek for the second place.

Although Anish Giri trailed the 18-year-old Nodirbek Abdusattorov by half-point going into the final round, his resounding victory against Richard Rapport combined with his compatriot Jordan van Foreest’s victory against Abdusattorov allowed him to lift the title. Following the culmination of thirteen rounds of matches, Giri finished with 8.5/13 points, while Abdusattorov and Carlsen were tied for second position with score of 8/13. Meanwhile, Wesley So drew against Indian prodigy to amass 7.5/13 and close the tournament with a fourth-place finish.
During Sunday’s final round of matches, GM Parham Maghsoodlo maintained his superb run to defeat Levon Aronian and finish his campaign with 7/13 points. Elsewhere, Arjun Erigaisi lost his last-round match against Magnus Carlsen to end this event in the bottom position with only 4/13 points. Sunday turned out to be an enjoyable day in the challengers group as all of the matches were decisive with Donachenko clinching the title.

After finishing as the runner-up of this event for a total of five times, Dutch ace Anish Giri bagged his first-ever title at the 2023 Tata Steel Chess Masters. Meanwhile, Ding Liren will be frustrated to finish the tournament with only 5.5/13 points in his last classical chess tournament before the world title match. Despite the popularity of this tournament, authorities haven’t revealed the prize money details and hence, the share of best performers is unknown.
