Every year on the third Sunday in January, Mumbai, India, hosts the Tata Mumbai Marathon, an annual international marathon. It is both the biggest marathon in Asia and the biggest sporting event in terms of overall mass participation. With a $405k prize fund, it is the wealthiest race in India. Six separate racing categories are available at the Mumbai Marathon: the Marathon (42.195 km), Half Marathon (21.097 km), Dream Run (6 km), Senior Citizens’ Run (4.3 km), Champions with Disability (2.4 km), & Timed 10K.
In front of Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, the marathon usually begins and in the later parts of this run, numerous iconic spots like Bandra-Worli Sea Link, the Flora Fountain, Marine Drive, Chowpatty, Haji Ali, & other well-known metropolitan landmarks are all passed by. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic’s presence, Mumbai Marathon was postponed for two years. However, the upcoming edition on 15th January, 2023 will more than amend for two-year absence owing to it’s star-studded line-up.

With her timing of 2:24:33 in women’s marathon during 2013 edition, Kenya’s Valentine Kipketer still holds the fastest timing by female athlete in an Indian marathon. Meanwhile, Derara Hurisa holds the fastest timing of men’s marathon due to his 2:08:15 timing in 2020, which shattered the previous record. Between Indian elite athletes and the international elite, the tournament helped close the gap. Indian runner Ram Singh Yadav achieved his best marathon performance at the 2012 competition, clocking in at 2:16:59, and qualified for the Summer Olympics.

This event provided a platform for some NGOs to spread the word about their initiatives and for others to solicit funding. Between the years 2004 and 2017, more than 1.9 billion (US$29 million) was raised. With 42,000 people participating in 2017 (raising 329 million, or $5,087,761), both the number of runners and the amount of money raised have dramatically increased over the years.
Prize Money Details of Mumbai Marathon
As per latest announcement, the best male runner in each age-group will earn 50,000 INR alongside top female runner of every age-group. Meanwhile for each age-group, runner-up among male participants and female contestants will each earn prize money of 30,000 INR.
