The Enforcement Directorate frozen fixed deposits worth Rs 41.9 crore of DMK leader and Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister, Ponmudi K. At the minister’s home and other locations, cash totaling Rs 81.7 lakh and foreign money worth Rs 13 lakh were recovered.

The ED interrogated Ponmudi and his son, DMK MP Gautham Sigamani, before releasing them. The focus of the inquiry is the allegedly erroneous issuing of red sand mining permits to Ponmudi’s son, his family, and unnamed holders.
His arrest comes after Senthil Balaji, another minister from M.K. Stalin’s Government, was taken into custody in June. As Ponmudi was in Bengaluru for an opposition unity conference, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin advised him to answer questions from the ED and handle the situation lawfully.

Ponmudi K is an Indian politician associated with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). He has been in the news because he was arrested and ED frozen fixed deposits.
He was born on 19, 1950, in T. Edaiyar, Tirukoilur Taluk, South Arcot district, Madras. His father’s name is Kandasamy, and his mother’s name is Parimala.
After finishing his schooling, Ponmudi K pursued a bachelor’s in law, master’s degrees in history, political science, and public administration, and a Ph.D. in political science. He graduated from Annamalai University.
He is married, and his wife’s name is Visalakashi.
Ponmudi is currently 74 years old.
Gautham Sigamani, the son of Minister Ponmudi too came under the ED scanner in 2020 and the central probe agency had then attached property in the case.
His career
Ponmudi K held the position of professor at the government college in Villupuram before engaging in professional politics.
He has won five elections for the Tamil Nadu legislature. He served as the Minister of Health for the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam from 1989 to 1991 and the Minister of Transport and Highways from 1996 to 2001.
He wrote the books Dravidian Movement in India and Black Movement in the United States.
